Kids Art!

Children’s art workshops can take many forms and many themes. my workshops are often tailored to a particular event or curriculum subject and incorporate many ideas, not just painting and drawing.

Origami, for example, may lead to ideas and discussions about geometry, architecture, mathematics and ancient history. Or a workshop on artist books may lead into discussions about plants and fibers in the ancient and modern world, language, visual communication, small sculpture and narrative.

If you would like a custom workshop feel free to contact me. There is no extra charge. In the meantime the following workshops may give you a few ideas...

Prep to Year 2

Fabulous Felt Crowns and Tiaras
Be a King or Queen for a day. Students will make a fabulous crown using felt, glittering jewels and items from the magic collage box.

Stained Glass Windows
Students learn about shape and colour and will light up the classroom with beautiful stained glass windows using cellophane and a variety of fantastical creature templates.

Crazy Creature Masks
Create a mask from paper and recycled materials. Mask templates can be pre-designed to create any type of creature to fit in with your current curriculum. While creating these marvelous masks students learn about shape, color and form, with a bit of over-the-top acting thrown in.

Little Monsters and Angels Wings
Make a set of wearable wings using butterfly, dragonfly or bird wing shapes and colours as inspiration. Using wire, cellophane, coloured card, stockings, glitter and lots more, students make a piece of wearable art to take home with which they can discover their inner monster, angel or fairy.

Painting Van Gogh's Sun Flowers
Take a vase of flowers, bright paint, creative kids and voila! You have a masterpiece in the making. Students learn about some of the ideas behind Van Gogh's amazing painting style and try a still life for themselves.

Leaf Prints
Get started with printmaking and create a stunning print with found leaves an other objects. Students will learn how texture can affect the shape and form of their print as well as experiment with their own unique colour combinations.

The Dragon Book
A wonderfully long freestanding scroll-style artist book made during the workshop where kids are encouraged to illustrate the adventures of a dragon with an allergy to gold and eating princesses.

Fruitbats - The Sculpture of Lin Onus
Students will make and decorate their own fruit bat. A stunning group artwork of multiples is created for the class room. When finished, each student can take their piece home to hang.

Known for his humour when creating art about serious subjects Lin Onus is a unique indigenous artist who's most famous work 'Fruit Bats', consists of fruit bats decorated in traditional indigenous style, hanging from a modern hills hoist.

Pre-historic Clay Pots
Learn how people in pre-history made bowls out of coiled clay and pinch pots. Make and decorate your own piece of the past to take home or display in the class room. After the workshop pots can be kiln-fired (waterproof and strong) for a small extra fee or sealed with PVA (not waterproof) before painting.

Dinosaur Piggybanks
What better creature is there to guard your pocket money? Using clay, students will make their very own dinosaur piggybank. This is a two part workshop to allow for firing of the clay then further painting and decorating. A small extra fee ($2.50 per dinosaur) is required for firing.

Sensational Felt Scarves
Wrap a swarm of bats around your neck, or perhaps bright spring flowers or warm autumn leaves. This warm and fuzzy workshop involves learning some basic sewing skills and a lot of creative thought and design.

Amazing Pop-up Cards
Make and design your very own pop-up cards using a wonderfully simple technique. Students will learn some of the basics of pop-up paper engineering and finish two or three amazing cards to take home..

Wizards Wands and Witches Sticks
Make your own magical wand with the ability to cast glittery spells. Students learn about movie prop making and sculptural techniques.

Origami Pocket Journal
These unique journals are made with pockets to store all sorts of interesting things. Made with a special origami technique, you'll become a master at folding and journal making.

Magic Potion Spell Books
These simple books are easy to make, and students are encouraged to add to the mysterious recipes provided. Learn about the history of potions and the weird things people tried to do with them for the last 2500 years.

Pirate Stamps and Treasure Maps
Create your own pirate-y stamps and design your very own treasure map using old paper, stamps and all sorts of other secret pirate materials. Along the way you'll learn a bit of pirate lore and history. Arrrrrrgh!

Animated Books
Learn about how cartoons work and make your very own animation using a handmade flick book and a variety of creative techniques.

Monoprints
Discover a whole new way of making monoprint images with innovative printmaking technques that have been developed just for kids. You don't need fancy equipment just a bit of imagination.

Years 6-7

Amazing Pop-up Cards, Advanced
Building on what they learnt in the last pop-up workshop students will learn even more paper engineering techniques to create a wonderfully complex pop-up card.

Write your own Choose Your Own Adventure
You are on your way home when you see a shimmering light. Do you...
A. Walk into it
B. Have a closer look at it
C. Run away screaming?
Students will be taken through the creative writing steps of how to write their very own choose your own adventure story with all the twists and turns that they can think of.

Sculptural Artist Books
What is a book? Students will create an artistic, handmade book using several traditional and not so traditional book making techniques. This workshop also explores the idea of whatmakes a book and looks at unusual books from different cultures.

Explore Printmaking
Choose from Monoprints, Relief (woodblock, lino, hand made stamps) and kid safe forms of Etching (drypoint on unusual surfaces). Each student will take home at least two finished pieces.
